Welcome to the Great West Way!
Bath is proud to be featured on this 125‑mile touring route combining the world‑renowned with the yet‑to‑be‑discovered. At one end is London with its famous royal sights and rich cultural heritage; at the other is the buzzing city of Bristol, home to Brunel, Banksy and (hot air) balloons.
Along the way
In between lie relaxing riverside towns, lush green landscapes, and characterful villages. But there’s so much more to the Great West Way than simply getting from A to B. With so much to see and do, if you add in all the tempting trails and off‑the‑beaten track detours there are 500 miles or more to explore.
Along the Great West Way are three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty: the Chilterns, the Cotswolds and the North Wessex Downs, and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Stonehenge and Avebury, Bath, and Kew Gardens. Visitors can watch the Changing of the Guard at Windsor Castle. Or lose themselves in the UK’s oldest surviving hedge maze at Hampton Court Palace. Sample award‑winning real ale at West Berkshire Brewery, take a cocktail masterclass at Bombay Sapphire, or have a go at a cookery class at Vaughan’s Kitchen, Devizes. Discover amazing gardens or take a sightseeing boat trip on the River Thames or Kennet & Avon Canal. Discover the delights of shopping in Bath, Swindon Designer Outlet or Parkway Shopping Centre, Newbury.
Bath and the Great West Way
Bath is a gorgeous, golden city, embraced by the gentle greenery of the Cotswolds which captivates at first glance. It’s a compact city, too, made for exploring on foot just as Jane Austen once did. If you’ve come by train, you can step out of Bath Spa station and be at the Roman Baths, the Royal Crescent or Thermae Bath Spa within minutes. And this mode of exploration is perfect for seeking out the unexpected sites of Bath too. Don’t let the city’s World Heritage Status and elegant exterior give you the impression there’s nothing left to discover. You’ll find Vietnamese supper clubs, banging metal pubs, top comedy clubs and plenty more you’d never imagine.
