For Janeites visiting the city, one way to fully immerse yourself in Austen’s Bath is booking a stay in a hotel or guesthouse with connections to the author.

From the former Austen family home to a hotel in a Georgian landmark, you’ll feel as content as Northanger Abbey heroine Catherine Morland upon checking in at any of these…

'They arrived in Bath…She was come to be happy, and she felt happy already.’ – Northanger Abbey

The Royal Crescent Hotel and Spa

Completed in 1775, the Royal Crescent was already an iconic Bath landmark by the time Jane Austen lived in the city between 1801 and 1806. Today, the five-star Royal Crescent Hotel offers you the chance to stay the night on the grand terrace, retiring in one of their elegant rooms or suites.

This luxurious abode makes for a truly memorable night’s sleep, with stunning gardens and a tranquil spa to enjoy in between any Austen sightseeing you have planned.

Speaking of Austen sightseeing, a trip along the terrace to No.1 Royal Crescent to learn more about Georgian life is a must.

The Jane Austen Room at Bailbrook House

Set on the edge of the city, this Grade II listed country house hotel is a former private residence from the 1790s – the type of place that would feel at home on the page of any Austen novel.

The hotel has individually decorated bedrooms themed around notable figures, including the Jane Austen room. With sumptuous period features, including a four-poster cherry wood bed, and grand windows overlooking the lawns, it’s perfect for a romantic getaway.

The Francis Hotel Bath

During one visit to Bath in 1799, when she came to see her aunt and accompany her brother as he planned to ‘take the cure,' Austen had a brief stay on Queen Square in the heart of the city. While her original accommodation is now an office block, the Francis Hotel is one place on the edge of the pretty Georgian park where you can still bed down for the night.

The Grade I listed building has been a hotel since the late 1800s, with a recent refurbishment restoring it to its eighteenth-century glory with Regency-inspired interiors. It also happens to be just a few minutes’ walk away from The Jane Austen Centre on Gay Street.

Hotel Indigo Bath

The five townhouses that Hotel Indigo Bath is spread across are steeped in history (Sir Walter Scott, William Wilberforce and the Duke of York are among the former lodgers), and themed bedrooms pay homage to the city’s heritage.

These include cosy ‘Literary Hideaway’ rooms with décor inspired by Bath’s famous authors, which, of course, includes Jane Austen. Above the bed is a collage of Bath novels, while a traditional writer’s bureau offers you a place to put pen to paper, should the literary surroundings stoke your inner writer.

The Paragon Townhouse

Austen's aunt and uncle, the Leigh-Perrots, once lived next door to this Georgian townhouse on the ever-fashionable Paragon terrace. The house still has its original layout spread over six floors and many original features like chandeliers and fireplaces, making it a quirky period place to stay.

Eight in Bath

This charming townhouse hotel based in the heart of Bath city centre offers twenty cosy ensuite rooms convenient for exploring many of Jane's favourite former haunts. These include the neighbouring Sally Lunn's Historic Eating House, where the author once wrote of 'disordering [her] stomach with Bath bunns,' and The Assembly Rooms, featured in the novels Persuasion and Northanger Abbey, where Jane would rub shoulders with others in fashionable Georgian society. You'll also find many of the city's other top attractions just steps away, such as The Roman Baths and Bath Abbey
